Q: Why did you write Past Tense?
Shawn: In the book’s 365 stories (a page per day!), Past Tense offers quick and practical solutions to life’s most common stressors, including daily life challenges, environmental stressors, life changes and workplace problems. The book is broken down into 24 sections touching on stresses across the spectrum. It incorporates wisdom from the ancients as well as modern sages, plus Biblical quote and teachings from major religions and philosophers. We like to think the book offers down-to-earth advice for people of all ages and from all walks of life. We’ll likely never be rid of stress completely, but in my own small way, I’m trying!
Ron: My goal is not only to improve myself, but to help others improve their own well-being as they fight drug addiction. We know that the growth process can be painful and challenging, and can create stresses of all kinds along the way. Past Tense can be a wonderful tool for managing those stresses. And given that everyone on the planet deals with stress, it can help anyone get through their own daily trials, no matter what their situations. Helping in this way inspires me to write.
Q: Was there any research involved?
Shawn: I love to research and once I have all the facts, the writing is easy for me. In addition to my experience at American Screening Corporation, I read extensively in philosophy texts – both modern and traditional – to inform this book, which makes it different from other self-help books available on the market today.
Ron: Much of the research for this book was practical experience gained in our roles as owners of one of the largest drug-screening equipment companies in the world.
Q: What has the reaction been to the book so far?
Our initial audience is the existing customers of American Screening Corporation, but there are many people from a variety of industries that would benefit from reading a self-help book like ours.
Q: Do you have any other books planned?
Shawn: A Big Book of Virtues which I originally drafted in just two days!
Ron: Right now, writing is a hobby for me. But we have over 55 published books published through our publishing company, American Screening Corporation. Check out our website to find books on stress, drug and alcohol abuse awareness and education for teens and parents. The website is http://www.americanscreeningcorp.com .
We own and operate one of the largest medical device companies in the world. ASC is exploding! A typical day for us is a top-down approach, checking on each department and developing new products as they are needed. We also have 3 children, ages 2, 5, and 10, so we stay very busy.
