Print On Demand has become a hot topic in the publishing industry. Recommended by some and discouraged by others. Okay… so what is Print On Demand?
Publishers no longer have to store books in warehouses, waiting for an order to come in. Systems have been created to use digital files. First, when an order comes in, a copy of the book is printed. An advantage to this is reducing the cost of carrying inventory and it can still keep old and new books readily available in this evolving industry and changing market place (Purchase on Demand: The New POD, Publishing Frontier, Posted: February 13th, 2009, by Joseph J. Esposito). Another advantage to POD publishing is if you wish to self-publish a book to fill the need of a small niche audience. This will attract the audience you are trying to reach and gain the desired attention.
Factors to consider when choosing the best-fit print on demand publisher:
1) Set up costs. Many POD’s charge a basic set-up fee to publish your book. You might have a tendency to choose a publisher that charges the cheapest amount. However, you need to keep in mind, just like any business, in order to fill the needs of the customer, the organization needs to make a profit. Remember to ask what your set up costs include and keep in mind to not sign anything you do not need.
2) Cover Price. You must remember it does cost more money to print one copy of a book at a time. Cover prices for POD Books are higher than the paper back market.
3) Royalty Payments. Keep in mind royalty payments. Most POD publishers pay you a percentage of net receipts. Net receipts are the amount that remains after printing costs and distributor’s discounts.
4) Control. You must know how much control you want over your work and keep that control.
5) Distribution. You still want your book to be available on online retail sites even if you cannot get it into a bricks and mortar store. Pick a distributor that tailor’s to your needs and that you are happy with.
6) Authors Discounts. Some POD’s make a discount available on copies ordered by the author and various other discounts. Self-publishing is no longer a pipe dream. With this new technology, you can make your publishing dreams come true.
